Attorney General Warns About North Carolina Payday Loan Scam |
The North Carolina Attorney General released a statement and warning Monday regarding telemarketing scams involving fake debt collection calls from individuals or groups posing as law enforcement officers.
Several individuals have received phone calls from people posing as North Carolina law enforcement officers working for the "Federal State Bureau of North Carolina," which does not actually exist. The callers claim that the individual owes a debt, usually a payday loan whether or not the person has ever used a paycheck advance, and must give them payment information or face immediate arrest.
The Attorney General warns that these types of calls are scams from both inside and outside the country, and that no person should ever give out personal information to a person that has called them unless they are absolutely sure of who they are talking to.
In many cases, the individuals might actually trick the number calling into appearing similar or exactly like a law enforcement agency local to the person they are calling. Officers will never call and ask for payment information for debts over the phone.
